Since 1996, Bar Code Depot has built its reputation on integrity, innovation, and putting people first. Much of that culture was shaped by one man—Gary Hardesty. Today, we celebrate his retirement, honor his legacy, and proudly announce a new chapter led by his son, Cliff Hardesty.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
Bar Code Depot began as a small but mighty company focused on providing reliable barcoding hardware, printer repair services, and labeling solutions. Gary didn’t just lead the company—he built it. Armed with deep product knowledge, a commitment to serving clients with excellence, and a vision for simplifying warehouse and inventory operations, Gary grew the business one handshake at a time.
Over nearly three decades, Gary guided Bar Code Depot through the rise of mobile computing, advances in warehouse automation, and the evolution of the supply chain industry. What never changed was his belief in doing right by his customers, his employees, and his partners.
Mentorship That Sparked a Mission
Gary often said he wouldn’t be where he is today without the guidance of his dear friend and mentor,
Paul Eugene “Gene” Coombs (RIP). While Gary worked at LXE, Gene was at Lockheed Martin, and the two formed a strong professional bond rooted in mutual respect and a shared love for hands-on problem solving. Gene instilled in Gary a deep respect for doing things the right way—even when it wasn’t the fastest or easiest route. One of Gene’s favorite sayings was: “There’s a tool for that,” often said with a smile whenever someone tried to fix something with a pocketknife or whatever was nearby.
Gene helped shape Gary’s solution-oriented mindset. That legacy lives on at Bar Code Depot, especially in the way Gary built the company to not only support the latest technology, but to also refurbish and repair quality used RF equipment—a cost-effective option for clients looking to extend the life of their legacy systems. He believed that a smaller company could meet the needs of a diverse client base by exploring every viable solution, not just selling new.
A Family Legacy, Continued
This next chapter is a personal one—because it’s not just a leadership transition, it’s a father-son legacy. We are proud to share that Cliff Hardesty will now be stepping into the role of President of Bar Code Depot. Cliff has been side-by-side with Gary for years, learning the business from the ground up, forging strong client relationships, and bringing a fresh perspective to operational and technological growth.
Cliff’s leadership style mirrors his father’s in many ways—dedicated, thoughtful, and always client-focused—but with an eye toward innovation and the future of warehousing and distribution.
The Future is Bright
Under Cliff’s direction, Bar Code Depot will continue expanding our service offerings and deepening relationships with manufacturers and partners. From cutting-edge mobile RF hardware and AI-driven inventory solutions to customized labeling systems and automation strategies, we’re committed to helping our clients simplify complexity and work smarter.
And while Gary is retiring from day-to-day operations, we’re incredibly fortunate that he will continue to support the company in a consulting role. His legacy will always be part of who we are—and who we strive to be.
